Tipping in Restaurants

Malaysian restaurants often include a “service charge” in the final bill. This isn’t a tip but an additional charge that goes directly to the restaurant to help pay workers’ salaries.

If a service charge isn’t included and you’re satisfied with the service, you can tip an optional 10%. If you don’t tip, your server won’t be offended.

Tipping in Bars

It’s not part of Malaysian culture to tip bartenders. However, you can round up your bill as a friendly gesture.

Tipping Taxi & Rickshaw Drivers

Since Malaysian taxis and rickshaws won’t always have meters, it’s better to negotiate your taxi fare before you set off. Since you’ll likely settle on a round number, there’s no need to tip extra.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

If a porter assists you with your luggage, it’s customary to tip 2-10 Ringgits per bag (depending on the weight of your luggage and the distance to your room). Hand the tip directly to the porter.

Tipping Housekeeping

A daily tip of 2-10 Ringgits is a considerate way to show your appreciation for a well-maintained room. Leave the tip in an obvious spot with a thank-you note.

Tipping Tour Guides

If you’re part of a tour group, you can tip 10% of the total tour cost at the end of the tour but it’s completely optional. If you’re on a private tour, tip the 10% unless you’re really dissatisfied.

Which Currency To Use

The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) is the official currency but major international currencies like US Dollars and Euros are accepted in touristy areas. Cash is preferred for tipping so have some Ringgit on hand but cards are widely accepted in larger establishments.
