Employees in the Portuguese service sector are paid relatively low wages so tips are appreciated and somewhat relied upon. That being said, there isn’t a US-style tipping culture so you’re only expected to tip if you’re satisfied with the service.

Calculate a culturally appropriate tip for Portugal using the calculator below and read on for more detail on tipping in Restaurants, Bars, Taxis, Hotels etc.

Tipping in Restaurants

If service charges (“Serviço”) and bread charges (“Coperto”) have been included in your bill, there’s no need to tip extra. If there’s no “Serviço”, you can tip around 10% if you’ve have good service.

Portuguese servers aren’t likely to coax you for a tip or chase you down the street if you fail to provide one so it’s completely up to you.

Tipping in Bars

Bartenders in casual bars don’t expect tips but if you’re in a high-end establishment, like a cocktail bar, consider handing your bartender a tip of around €2.

Also, be aware that some places with live music or entertainment might add a cover charge (“Entrada”).

Tipping Taxi Drivers

There’s no strict rule when it comes to tipping Taxi, Uber or Bolt drivers in Portugal. It’s not customary to tip unless your driver goes above and beyond by helping you with your luggage or similar. In that case, you can round up to the nearest €5.

Tipping The Porter/Bellhop

Tip a porter (“Carragadores”) around €1 per bag but don’t tip more than €5 total.

Tipping Housekeeping

It’s considerate to tip your housekeeper in Portugal around €1-2 per day. Leave your tip in an obvious spot in your room with a note.

Tipping Tour Guides

If you’ve paid for your tour, you can tip nothing or anything up to around 10% at the end of the tour. If you’re on a free tour, they will expect a tip of around €5-10 depending on the tour’s length and your level of satisfaction.

Which Currency To Use

You’ll only really have one currency option when it comes to paying or tipping in Portugal and that’s the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in larger establishments but it’s good to have some cash on hand for tipping.
